Lines & Calls & SIP

Over the next few years the choice telephone lines available will reduce from the current choice of; analogue lines on copper, ISDN2, ISDN30E, SIP to purely SIP.

Analogue Lines and ISDNs terminate at a BT local exchange and from there the calls are routed to your network of choice via the PSTN (Public Service Telephone Network).

All networks are currently regulated by Ofcom, as are the majority of CPs (Communication Providers), CPs are the interface between the network and businesses who use the service. (BT Retail, NSL Telecoms and others).

There is no requirement to be regulated to provide SIP services, so it is a ‘buyer beware’ situation.

NSL have been providing all services on all line types for over 10 years and so have the experience to help business achieve their objectives.

SIP, or SIP Trunks, do not take a physical form, they are an addressing protocol that facilitates voice being transmitted over data connections.

An ISDN channel, or and analogue line has a bandwidth of 64Kb, it is recommended that the data bandwidth allowed is 100Kb per SIP (voice) channel.

With NSL’s experience we also recommend the SIP channels are on a dedicated data connection, and nor share a connection with data, and additionally QuOS is applied. By keeping SIP separate there is ‘interference’ from data swamping the bandwidth, and applying QuOS retains the sequence of the packets in the correct sequence – packets being what is used for the voice transit.

For fast resolution of any issues NSL recommend that all the elements of SIP, the data connection, the call and the SIP trunk are with the same network throughout the business.

Is there an alternative to SIP, yes, please see our SaaS products.
